    CEDARtools.SmartTrace for debugging

Failures that move the moment you observe them are a tooling problem. Passive trace records execution without touching the timing that triggers them.

    In brief

A Heisenbug is a failure that changes its behavior, or disappears entirely, the moment you try to observe it - because the usual observation methods (printf, breakpoints) change the timing that triggers it. Passive hardware trace records execution without adding application-side logging or breakpoints, which removes the observation mechanisms that most often move the bug.

Observation that does not touch the timing

    Compare the options honestly:

    • printf alters timing and shows only what someone thought to log in advance.
    • Breakpoints halt execution - fatal for anything timing-sensitive.
    • Passive trace records the actual execution while it happens, with the application unchanged.

For a failure whose defining property is that observation makes it move, the method that does not perturb the application is not a preference - it is the entry condition. Trace enablement, transport and the surrounding bench can still have platform-specific effects that the measurement record should state.

    Watching for the interesting moment

A trace processor such as CEDARbox decodes the stream live, so triggers can watch for the interesting moment for hours or days while the target keeps running - the observation window is not bounded by a capture buffer. SmartTrace is the host-side environment around such sessions: it configures the supported trace session, associates the captured observation with the correct program image, and shows reconstruction and validity status.

The hunt scales with machine patience

Trace-based debugging is an iteration loop: set a trigger hypothesis, wait for the failure, inspect, narrow, repeat. The tooling handles each step well; what wears out is the human. An AI agent driving the trigger-capture-analyze loop on a hardware-in-the-loop bench can run the hunt unattended - iteration two hundred costs no engineer time, and an agent that debugs with trace avoids the perturbation mechanisms that define the Heisenbug problem.
